Groundhogs: How to get rid of groundhogs

Groundhog...Woodchuck...Whistlepig...Punxsutaney Phil (of TV weather forecasting fame)

A big rodent who often brazenly (when no dogs are around) eats your garden goodies, your flower beds finest flowers, stinks and smells horrible, and whose burrows regularly break the legs of horses and other livestock.

GOT DAMAGE TO STOP? HERE IS WHAT YOU DO

REMOVE PLACES TO HIDE: Piles of trash, wood, or brush let him watch you...but not be seen. Groundhogs tend not to like open areas.

PUT THINGS  IN HIS BURROW to irritate him so he moves out or passes. It usually has 2 entrances, either one will do.

(Organic things but some toxic as well)

  • Mothballs
  • Used (yes, after the cat did her thing) cat litter
  • Human hair from the barber shop
  • Flood the hole with water
  • Buy a smoke bomb and smoke him out
  • Put a hose from the running exhaust of your tractor, car, or lawnmower down the hole
  • Put a poison bait down the hole if legal to do so.

IN YOUR GARDEN, use a scarecrow or motion device that sprays, makes noise, or uses lights. You can buy them locally or from the internet. Plant marigolds and garlic to deter him and other pests.

FENCE HIM OUT: A wire fences at least a foot underground bent out and 4 feet above ground with the top 1 foot bent outward does the trick. They are good tunnelers and climbers so you have to be devious to win with this approach.

COMMERCIAL ORGANIC REPELLENTS:
There are products which often use fox or coyote urine to send them packing. These are available on the internet and occasionally locally.

TRAP THE GROUNDHOG:

As the last resort, SHOOT HIM: If legal and safe, dispatch him and bury the carcass. It is easy to do because they are slow movers.
